The Navy's Aviation Ordnance rating began on April 9, 1915 when a Chief Gunners Mate and a Chief Turret Captain, along with several other mechanics, were sent to Pensacola, Florida to work on what would be the beginning of aircraft armament and ordnance systems. In the Navy today, everyone wearing a red jersey on aircrat carriers is an ordnancemen, which means they handle the aircraft's bullets, bombs, missiles, and rockets on the flight deck. Crash and salvage crews also wear red jerseys and work alongside those wearing silver protective suits. As a sign of honor, the Red Shirt Riders created a motorcycycle group representing active and retired aviation ordnancemen. They have decided to support A Few Good MENtors, Inc. (AFGM) on their inaugural motorcycle ride to Oklahoma City, OK. For more information, contact retired LCDR, Mercer Morgan
